What is Lawn Sand and What Does It Do?

What is Lawn Sand?

Lawn sand is a tonic that improves the overall health of your lawn. What does lawn sand do? It offers all the benefits of a weed or moss killer. The sand is one of the best ways to get rid of unwanted plantations while keeping the lawn green and healthy.

As you can guess from its name, sand is the primary component of this product. The other two ingredients are ammonium and iron sulphate. Let’s discuss them in detail.

Ammonium Sulphate

Ammonium Sulphate

Promotes grass growth because Ammonium sulphate contains nitrogen. It reduces moss and is also helpful in the repairing process. Hence, it is the best fertilizer to apply in spring when the soil is cold. None other fertilizers will work until and unless the soil becomes warm.

Iron sulphate

Another powerful component to kill moss, iron sulphate has multiple benefits. You can use this ingredient very easily; dissolve it in the water and spray it over your lawn. Iron sulphate strengthens the turf and makes it resistant to several diseases.

Iron sulphate

Apart from that, this powerful fertilizer reduces worm cast production. It removes broadleaf weeks and keeps your lawn free from unwanted growth. These are the reasons why this ingredient gives you a green and healthy lawn.

Does not offers any benefit to your lawn. Sand is only a carrier, which helps you to distribute the other two components without any hassles.

When to Apply Lawn Sand?

The best time to apply lawn sand is between the spring and autumn when the grasses are growing. Using lawn sand is recommended in the early and even mid-spring season, which generally falls during the last week of March till mid-April. The conditions can vary according to your region, so you should apply the lawn sand in between or around these two months.

Lawn sand application is not suitable if there are chances of drought, rain or frost. Also, do not try to spread it in windy weather. Otherwise, the sand will fly to unwanted areas like pond and flower garden.

We recommend that you should not apply lawn sand right after cutting the grasses. If you mowed the grasses recently, then allow them to grow for at least 3 to 4 days. Similarly, allow the lawn sand to settle for up to 4 days after applying it. Plus, do not cut the grasses these days.

How to Apply Lawn Sand?

You can put in the lawn sand by hands or using a lawn spreader. Check the included instructions to know how much sand you need to apply per square meter. The average is 100 grams per meter, but it can vary depending upon the manufacturer.

Spread by hands

Wear protective gloves and split the lawn sand into two equal piles. You have to spread each of the sand lots in separate directions. For instance, use the first lot or pile to cover the areas from left to right/south to north. Apply the second lot in opposite direction, which is north to south/right to left. Following this process makes sure that the lawn sand is evenly distributed all over the area. You can try Westland lawn sand for areas up to 200 sq. meter (16 kg).

Spread by Spreader

Application of Lawn Sand

Separate the lawn sand in two equal proportions. Put the first lot into the spreader and open its outlet around half. Manoeuvre the spreader back and forth like you move the lawnmower. After spreading the first pile, add the second to the spreader, come back to your starting position and cover the other part as we described above.

Water the lawn

Water the lawn

The lawn needs watering within 48 hours after you apply lawn sand. If you are fortunate, then it might rain. However, you need to water the lawn manually if there are no forecasts for rain. Keep your kids and pets away from the lawn after you water it. Do not allow them to play on the lawn for some days.

Final talk

Applying lawn sand is an old practice, but it’s still effective. You can use it all over the lawn, but not on the new turf or growths. In other words, do not apply the lawn sand on anything new. Wait for at least one year. Remove the lawn sand granules from driveways, pathway or decking because it can discolour all these surfaces.
